Our Hospice House
“Words cannot express how we feel towards everyone at the Hospice House, with the love and care given not only to our Mom but also to us.”

Sanctuary...that’s what Hospice of the Piedmont is.
The oldest and most experienced hospice in the region, we provide compassionate pain control and symptom management wherever our patients call home. But some patients benefit from our gentle, expert care at our beautiful, welcoming Hospice House. A sanctuary of peace, love, and beauty, it perfectly expresses our mission to celebrate quality of life to the very end.
The Newton & Wilma Thomas Hospice House is an historic, turn-of-the-century Victorian home at 501 Park Street in Charlottesville, a charming neighborhood conveniently located near restaurants and shops. This beautifully restored home has eight light-filled private rooms, each with its own bathroom and plenty of space for family members to gather and visit with their loved one.
To be admitted to Hospice House, you must be evaluated by Hospice of the Piedmont’s clinical services team to ensure it’s the most appropriate location for hospice care.
While basic hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance policies, there is a “room and board” charge for patients at the Hospice House, which covers the costs associated with round-the-clock staffing. Families pay Hospice of the Piedmont for these services, according to ability, based on a financial screening. We’re glad to work with you to get the care you need at the price you can afford.
Hospice House is available to all patients, regardless of ability to pay, thanks to the generous support of our community to the Hospice House Endowment and Operations Funds. To learn more about supporting HOP’s Hospice House, click here.
