What is this medication used for?

  • It is used to ease moderate to severe pain.
  • It may also be used to treat cough and shortness of breath

How is this medication best taken?

Read and follow the dosing on the label closely or follow the directions given to you by your doctor. Do not use more than you were told to use.

Long acting products:

  • Take scheduled doses as you have been told, even if you feel well. To gain the most benefit, do not miss doses.
  • Take this medication the same time each day.
  • Do not use for fast pain relief or on an as needed basis unless instructed by your doctor.
  • Take with or without food. Take with food if it causes an upset stomach.

Tablet (long acting):

  • Swallow whole. Do not chew, break, or crush.
  • Do not put down a feeding tube.

Capsule (long acting):

  • Swallow whole. Do not chew, break, or crush.
  • You may sprinkle contents of capsules on applesauce. Do not chew. Swallow the mixture right away. Do not store for a later time. Rinse mouth to make sure all contents have been swallowed.
  • Some brands of this medication may be given down certain types of feeding tubes.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


Storage Information:

Keep out of the reach of children, in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature, away from excess moisture (bathroom) and heat.


What should I watch for while taking morphine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor and/or hospice nurse as soon as possible:

  • Very bad dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Trouble passing urine
  • Changes in thinking clearly
  • Very bad belly pain
  • Hives
  • Very hard stools (constipation)
  • Very bad headache
  • Hallucinations

Common side effects to tell your doctor and/or hospice nurse about if they continue or are bothersome:

  • Feeling sleepy
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Itching/rash
    Sweating
