Hospice House

Opened in 2004, the Newton & Wilma Thomas Hospice House is one of only three licensed, residential hospice facilities in the state of Virginia.

Hospice of the Piedmont's Hospice House in Charlottesville Virginia is a classic red brick Victorian with a wrap around front porch, it sits in level landscaped yard with mature leafy trees.

What is the Hospice House?

Hospice House residents receive the same compassionate, expert care as our home hospice patients, but in the comfortable, elegant surroundings of one of Charlottesville’s most beautiful homes.

A licensed nurse is on duty at all times, providing a better ratio of patient care than is found in most skilled nursing homes. Patients also receive pain management, advanced illness management, comfort care, and spiritual and emotional support from nurses, nursing assistants, medication aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers.

Who is cared for at the Hospice House?

Hospice House offers around-the-clock, compassionate care to patients who no longer have a caregiver or whose loved ones are unable to provide care at home during the final part of their journey. For example, if a patient lives alone and their family lives far away, it may not be safe or practical for them to continue living at home. In such a situation, a hospice care center like Hospice House may be a good option.

What are the accommodations like?

This stately, restored Victorian home was originally constructed in 1901, and due to its architectural beauty it has long been known as one of the hidden gems of Central Virginia.

Hospice House contains 8 patient rooms, each with a private bath. It also boasts spacious areas for visiting friends and family, as well as kitchen and dining facilities, a meditation room, laundry facilities, and office space for clinical staff. Overnight accommodations for staff are available in the event of inclement weather to ensure adequate staffing at all times.

Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance – in many cases at no cost to patients. However, there is a room and board charge of $250 per day at the Hospice House. In some instances, room and board may be covered thanks to generous community philanthropy.
