Former President Taught the Country to Expect More from the End of Life
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — December 30, 2024 – Hospice of the Piedmont expresses its deepest condolences to former President Jimmy Carter’s family and loved ones upon his passing.
Known for his humility and ability to connect with people from all walks of life, President Carter’s legacy extends beyond his time in office, touching lives around the world through his commitment to compassion, integrity, and service.
Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Jimmy Carter rose to become the 39th President of the United States, serving from 1977 to 1981. His remarkable legacy, however, transcended politics. After his presidency, Carter continued to champion humanitarian causes, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his dedication to conflict resolution, human rights, and global development.
President Carter’s decision to enter hospice care offered profound lessons for the American public. Through his openness and honesty, he redefined the conversation around end-of-life care, demonstrating the advantages of embarking on life’s final chapter on his own terms. With the support of a local hospice provider, President Carter was able to spend the final 22 months of his life at home, surrounded by family.
Dr. Alina Fomovska, Chief Medical Officer at Hospice of the Piedmont, shared, “President Carter’s decision to enroll in hospice care has shown us that the journey towards the end of life should be marked by choices that reflect personal values and preferences. It is a reminder that hospice care is about empowerment, comfort, and embracing what truly matters.”
Hospice of the Piedmont, which was founded during the Carter Administration, is deeply appreciative that the Carter Center chose to share President Carter’s decision to enroll in hospice. The courageous decision is another remarkable gift to the American people, promoting open, honest conversations about a challenging topic and fostering a deeper understanding of how to achieve comfort and dignity at life’s end.
As we reflect on President Carter’s legacy, we invite anyone in our community seeking support and guidance with advanced illness and declining health to connect with Hospice of the Piedmont. For more information, please visit our website at www.hopva.org.
