Our Positive Approach to Dementia Care

Life can be unpredictable. If a loved one has been diagnosed with a cognitive impairment, the unpredictability factor can be magnified.

Where do you go? Who should you consult with? What can you expect?

It is perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed during this difficult time, but it is also important to know you are not alone and there is support available to help you best care for your loved one.

What to Expect and Where to Go

Each day may bring about new changes in the life of both the patient and the caretaker. This is why Hospice of the Piedmont offers a wide range of quality services like dementia care, Alzheimer’s care, and services for other illnesses. Our staff is loving and thorough, so you can have peace of mind knowing your relative is in good hands. Whether the services are for you or someone you love, end-of-life care is covered by private and public insurance so your family can focus on the immediate and foreseeable future.

How the Gem Model Is Applied to the Service Plan

How are needs evaluated and what’s appropriate for you or your loved one? The Gems Model is a spectrum that rates the severity of cognitive impairment.

  • A sapphire denotes normal aging with signs of difficulty learning new skills.
  • A diamond may be a bit more aloof, prefers routine with the tendency to tell stories repeatedly.
  • An emerald has a tendency to remain attached to the past and may lose things and be hesitant to receive or ask for help.
  • An amber is fond of sensations (sight, touch, smell), prefers a dynamic environment, and a tendency to be impatient.
  • A ruby may have difficulty with fine motor skills and be limited in mobility.
  • A pearl may show little interest in their surroundings and have trouble swallowing.
