Bequests + Sample Language
Bequests are one of the simplest, most meaningful, and widely chosen ways to make a planned gift. They allow you to leave a lasting legacy with Hospice of the Piedmont while preserving your assets during your lifetime. You may choose to direct a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate to support our mission. To make a bequest, simply include Hospice of the Piedmont in your will or trust.
Types of Bequests: There are two basic types of bequests, unrestricted and restricted. An unrestricted bequest allows Hospice of the Piedmont, Inc. to use your gift where it is needed most. A restricted bequest designates how your gift will be spent. Please contact Hospice of the Piedmont’s Development Office to make sure we can honor your wishes regarding a restricted bequest. Some sample bequest language follows. Please seek the advice of an attorney for your specific wishes.
Sample Bequest Language:
An unrestricted gift empowers Hospice of the Piedmont to respond to the greatest needs of the patients and families we serve. For this, use the following language for your will and/or trust:
“I give, devise, and bequeath to Hospice of the Piedmont Inc., a nonprofit corporation currently located at 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911, or its successor thereto, _________ [written dollar amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted general use and purposes.”
To designate your provision for a particular purpose:
“I hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Hospice of the Piedmont, Inc., a nonprofit corporation currently located at 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911, or its successor thereto, _________ [written dollar amount or percentage of the estate or description of property]. This gift should be used for the restricted purpose of (state purpose). If, in the future, Hospice of the Piedmont, Inc. determines that the restriction placed herein would result in an impracticable use of the bequest, it may assign an alternative purpose closest to my wishes.
If you are considering a restricted bequest, we encourage you to contact Hospice of the Piedmont to discuss your intentions in advance. Doing so helps ensure that your bequest can be used as you envision and that your charitable wishes are fully honored.
-
Life Insurance Policies
You can make a meaningful gift by naming Hospice of the Piedmont as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy. Because Hospice of the Piedmont is a nonprofit, we pay no income tax on such gifts, allowing the full value of your policy to directly support compassionate care for our patients and their families.
-
Retirement Assets
As part of an estate planning strategy, a direct gift of retirement assets—such as traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, and 403(b)s—to Hospice of the Piedmont can be highly tax-efficient. Distributions from inherited retirement accounts are generally taxed as ordinary income, while assets left directly to a qualified charity pass income-tax free. In addition, individuals age 70½ or older may make Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from an IRA, which can be used to satisfy all or part of a required minimum distribution (RMD) once RMDs begin.
-
Gifts of Real Estate
When you donate appreciated property you have owned for more than one year to Hospice of the Piedmont, you may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction and potentially reduce or eliminate capital gains tax. You also relieve yourself of ongoing responsibilities such as maintenance costs, property taxes, and insurance. Another advantage is that you don’t need to worry about selling the property. You can deed it directly to Hospice of the Piedmont, or your attorney can include a few simple sentences in your will or trust to make the gift.
-
Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRT)
This type of trust allows you, or other individuals you designate, to receive annual income for life or for a term of up to 20 years from the assets you contribute. When the trust term ends or upon the death of the income beneficiary, the remaining balance is distributed to Hospice of the Piedmont.
-
Charitable Lead Trust (CLT)
A Charitable Lead Trust allows you to support Hospice of the Piedmont now, providing dependable income for our mission for a set period of time. When the trust term concludes, the remaining assets pass to your family or other beneficiaries you choose, helping you care for those you love while making a meaningful impact today.
