JOIN A GIVING SOCIETY TODAY

Hospice of the Piedmont has three unique giving societies for donors dedicated to our mission to positively transform the way people view and experience serious illness, dying, and grief.

THE SUSTAINER SOCIETY

This society recognizes donors who make monthly recurring gifts in support of Hospice of the Piedmont. These customizable, ongoing contributions provide a reliable source of funding that helps sustain our supportive programs and services throughout the year, ensuring compassionate care for patients and families when they need it most. THE PIEDMONT SOCIETY

This leadership-level giving circle brings together donors who make annual gifts of $1,000 or more. Far more than a donor recognition society, this dedicated group of individuals are core members of the HOP family who help us continue our long-standing mission of providing expert care and peaceful resolution to everyone in our community.

In appreciation of your support, your name will be placed on the Piedmont Society Honor Roll, (with your permission) and you’ll receive special invitations to member-only events. Scroll down to see this year’s Piedmont Society Luncheon photos.

THE LEGACY SOCIETY

The Legacy Society recognizes and honors friends and benefactors who have made plans to support Hospice of the Piedmont through a planned gift.  A planned gift enables you to document a benefit to us that will come in the future, while meeting your current financial, personal, and philanthropic goals. Legacy gifts ensure that generations to come will have access to quality hospice care.

If you have chosen to include Hospice of the Piedmont in your will, trust, or estate plans, we would be honored to know. By sharing your intentions, you help ensure your legacy reflects your values and supports compassionate care for patients and families for years to come. Your wishes will always be respected, and if you prefer to remain anonymous, your generosity will be kept in the strictest confidence.

Planned Gift Examples

  • Bequests + Sample Language

Bequests are one of the simplest, most meaningful, and widely chosen ways to make a planned gift. They allow you to leave a lasting legacy with Hospice of the Piedmont while preserving your assets during your lifetime. You may choose to direct a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate to support our mission. To make a bequest, simply include Hospice of the Piedmont in your will or trust.

    Sample Bequest Language:

An unrestricted gift empowers Hospice of the Piedmont to respond to the greatest needs of the patients and families we serve. For this, use the following language for your will and/or trust:

“I give to Hospice of the Piedmont Inc., a nonprofit corporation currently located at 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911, or its successor thereto, _________ [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted charitable use and purpose.”

To designate your provision for a particular purpose:

“I give to Hospice of the Piedmont Inc., a nonprofit corporation currently located at 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911, or its successor thereto, _________ [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property]. This gift should be used for (state purpose) if and so long as Hospice of the Piedmont determines that the need exists. If Hospice of the Piedmont shall determine at the outset or at a later time that the need does not exist, or no longer exists or for some reason it is not possible (or prudent) to administer my gift as originally intended, then Hospice of the Piedmont may, in its sole and uncontrolled discretion, direct the use of my bequest for a purpose related as closely as possible to that stated above.”

  • Life Insurance Policies

You can make a meaningful gift by naming Hospice of the Piedmont as the beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy. Gifting a life insurance policy can help reduce your taxable estate, while ensuring your generosity makes a lasting impact. Because Hospice of the Piedmont is a nonprofit, we pay no income tax on such gifts, allowing the full value of your policy to directly support compassionate care for our patients and their families.

  • Retirement Plans

As part of an estate planning strategy, a direct gift of retirement assets to Hospice of the Piedmont can be highly tax-efficient. Unlike other inheritances that may pass to heirs free of income tax, distributions from inherited retirement accounts are generally taxed as ordinary income—potentially reducing the value by as much as 75%. By naming Hospice of the Piedmont as the beneficiary, you can ensure your gift supports the care and services you value, while leaving other assets—such as stocks, bonds, or real estate—to your heirs with potentially lower tax impact.

  • Gifts of Real Estate

When you donate appreciated property you have owned for more than one year to Hospice of the Piedmont, you may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction and potentially reduce or eliminate capital gains tax. You also relieve yourself of ongoing responsibilities such as maintenance costs, property taxes, and insurance.

Another advantage: you don’t need to worry about selling the property. You can deed it directly to Hospice of the Piedmont, or your attorney can include a few simple sentences in your will or trust to make the gift.

  • Charitable Remainder Trusts

This type of trust allows you—or other individuals you designate—to receive annual income for life or for a term of up to 20 years from the assets you contribute. When the trust term ends or upon the death of the income beneficiary, the remaining balance is distributed to Hospice of the Piedmont.

  • Charitable Lead Trust

A Charitable Lead Trust allows you to support Hospice of the Piedmont now, providing dependable income for our mission over a period of time. When the trust term concludes, the remaining assets pass to your family or other beneficiaries you choose—helping you care for those you love while making a meaningful impact today.
