Grief and Healing
Everyone experiences loss. That’s why we offer free, ongoing bereavement support groups for the entire community, whether your loved one used our hospice services or not. From support groups and memorial services to connections with community resources and more, we help individuals, families, and communities live forward after loss.
Our Grief and Healing program is made possible thanks to generous community philanthropy. To learn more about donating to Hospice of the Piedmont, visit our giving page.

No one should have to cope with loss alone. We provide grief support groups to anyone who needs it, even if their loved one wasn’t in our care.

Zoom Groups
Drop-In: Support Group for General Grief
Wednesdays from 3:00–4:00 pm
Starting on August 6th and ending November 5th
Grieving the loss of a loved one is a painful yet natural part of healing. We are here to help you navigate through that process. Please join us for a drop-in support group where grief related to any loss can be shared and supported. Participants can attend just once or as many times as needed.
Drop-In: Loss of Spouse/Partner Women’s Group
Tuesdays from 4:00–5:00 pm
Starting on August 5th and ending on December 9th
This is a drop-in group specifically for women who have lost a partner or spouse to connect with others who have experienced a similar loss. Participants can attend just once or as many times as needed.
Drop-In: Young Adult Loss Group
Tuesdays from 1:00–2:00pm
Starting on August 5th and ending September 30th
Our young adult support group provides a safe place to connect with others who have experienced a similar loss and is open to anyone between the ages of 18 and 45. Grief can be hard regardless, but when your peers are struggling with more normative life experiences as a young adult, it can be hard to relate or find support geared to your unique experience of grief.
In-Person Groups
Mending HeArts: Altered Books
Thursdays from 2:00–3:30 pm
Starting on September 4th and ending on October 23rd
Grief is not linear, and neither is healing. In this supportive, hands-on group series, we’ll use altered books—repurposed and artistically transformed books—as a unique and expressive medium for processing the death of a loved one. Through cutting, collaging, painting, writing, and layering, participants will reshape old books into deeply personal art journals that tell the story of grief, love, and transformation.
This is not an art class, and no prior experience is necessary. Whether your grief is recent or long held, this group offers a gentle, creative space to explore memory, sorrow, resilience, and hope. Each week will include guided prompts, time for creative work, and optional sharing in a safe, trauma-informed environment.
Please bring a book (hardcover is preferred) that you feel comfortable altering. All other materials will be provided.
Mending the Line: A Fly-Fishing Workshop for Men Navigating Grief
Saturday from 9:30am–5:00 pm
September 27th
Grief can be heavy, silent, and hard to name—especially for men who are often expected to carry it alone. This unique workshop for any man processing the death of a loved one blends the quiet rhythm of fly fishing with the healing process of grief work. Out on the water, casting a line becomes more than just a technique—it becomes a metaphor for letting go, paying attention, and finding movement in stillness.
Led by an experienced guide in both fly fishing and process circles, this day-long workshop offers a supportive space for men to step away from daily pressures and into nature. Through group reflections, hands-on fishing practice, and quiet time on the river, we’ll explore how grief lives in the body, and how the act of “mending the line” can teach us something about tending to ourselves. *You don’t need to talk if you’re not ready. Just come as you are and let the water do some of the work.
No previous fishing experience is needed. Gear will be provided, or feel free to bring your own. Please bring a packed lunch. Water and snacks will also be provided. The event will be held on Moorman’s River; the exact location will be shared after registration.
Mending HeArts: Navigating Grief through Sock Puppetry
Friday from 3:00–6:00 pm
October 24th
Grief doesn’t always speak in full sentences—it sometimes whispers, hides, or waits for the right outlet. In this gentle, imaginative workshop, we’ll use sock puppetry as a creative way to give shape and voice to the emotions of grief.
By crafting a puppet—choosing its features, giving it a voice, and allowing it to tell a story—we open space to explore complex feelings with curiosity, compassion, and even a little humor. Puppets can say things we may not yet be ready to say ourselves, offering a surprisingly safe and powerful channel for expression.
This is not about performance or being “good at” art. It’s about showing up as you are and letting your creativity lead. The workshop includes guided prompts, time to make and interact with your puppet, and optional opportunities for sharing in a supportive, nonjudgmental space.
Please bring one clean sock (a lone sock is perfect!) that you feel comfortable transforming into a puppet. All other materials will be provided.
This workshop is open to adults processing the death of a loved one. No experience needed—just a willingness to explore grief with an open mind and a sense of whimsy.
General Grief Group (Culpeper)
Wednesdays from 1:00–2:00pm
Next start date to be announced
Grieving the loss of someone you love can feel overwhelming. You don’t have to go through it alone.
This free, five-week group meets weekly at our Culpeper office and brings together people from our community experiencing loss. Each session includes time to talk, learn practical coping tools, and support one another in a space of trust and respect.
We’ll use a book to help guide the conversation each week. The group builds over time, so we ask participants to commit to attending all eight sessions. You don’t need any previous connection to Hospice of the Piedmont — everyone is welcome, no matter your story or background.
