A Joyful Tribute at the Hospice of the Piedmont 5K
“We like to say she put the ‘spice’ in hospice,” Betty Groth shared with a smile as she reflected on her sister, Midge.
Standing in Keswick on a beautiful spring morning, Betty Groth and Anne Flinn — wearing a bird-adorned hat and hummingbird inflatable — gathered with family and friends at the Hospice of the Piedmont 5K to honor Midge’s memory by completing the 3.2-mile course together. An avid birder with a joyful spirit, Midge would have loved every moment of it.
“She was fun,” Betty said. “She would have really enjoyed everyone coming together and having fun in her memory.”
Finding Comfort and Joy Through Hospice Care
Following a diagnosis of brain cancer, Midge faced her illness with courage and grace. As her journey progressed, she began receiving Hospice of the Piedmont services.
Reflecting on their experience, Betty shared that hospice “brought Midge comfort and joy,” highlighting the many supportive services Hospice of the Piedmont provides, including pet therapy, supportive music, and more. Anne added simply, “It was a lot of joy.”
Betty and Anne also hope to encourage others to begin hospice care early. “You’re not giving up,” Betty shared as primary caregiver. “You’re gaining support — for your loved one and for yourself.”
Giving Back in Midge’s Memory
Beyond honoring their sister, Betty, Anne, and their team participated in the 5K to help fundraise for the same services that brought comfort to Midge during her final journey. The 5k raised just under $90,000 towards compassionate end of life care and supportive services.
By spreading joy and paying it forward, they continue to celebrate the spirit that made Midge so special.
