As the weather begins to warm and winter draws to a close, seniors are searching for ways to keep themselves busy and enjoy life while still keeping safe during the pandemic. Thankfully, there is no shortage of COVID-friendly activities for them to enjoy! Here is a sampling of some of the best.
Gardening
Gardening comes with many benefits. It is outdoors and involves a lot of movement, so seniors can simultaneously spend time outdoors and get some great exercise. It has a relatively low barrier of entry, meaning that most can pick it up with ease. Plus, there is no shortage of information about how to garden, types of beginner plants they can try, and recipes to make when it comes time to harvest!
Spring Cleaning
Yes, spring is almost here, and that probably means it’s time to get some cleaning done. In this case, COVID can serve as a great excuse to get the house in order and get rid of any junk that has been watching gathering dust for years.
Nature Walk
Have trails or nearby? This is the perfect time to get outdoors, get some exercise, and explore nature and the surrounding community. Seniors should make sure to take care and wear masks, but a nature walk is very safe and makes it easy to stay outdoors and away from others.
Arts & Crafts
Arts and crafts such as knitting and painting provide great ways to pass the time while creating something beautiful and enjoying oneself! Furthermore, thanks to all of the technological options at our disposal, seniors can take online classes or enjoy these activities with others virtually.
Fitness – Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, Meditation
There is no question that staying in shape can be extremely beneficial for our senior’s physical and emotional health, particularly in times of high stress – like during the pandemic. Thankfully, there are numerous fitness methods that have been identified as easy and safe for seniors. They should, of course, check with their doctors first, but Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, and meditation are typically safe and low impact.
